Appointment of New Leader for 2017

The orchestra is a true community orchestra with players of varying ages and experience, from Grade VI to professional, performing works from classical to the 21st century. We usually give 3 main concerts per year, also a Children’s Concert and a “come and play” workshop day, and we rehearse on Sunday evenings in Abergavenny, from 6.30 until 9.00 (typically around 30 rehearsals per year).

The orchestra has enjoyed a continuous increase in its playing standards over the last fifteen years, allowing us to perform works by Brahms, Sibelius, Shostakovich and Mahler, amongst others.

We are looking to appoint a new leader who can help us to build further on the progress we have already made, and to work with our music director Dennis Simons. This is an opportunity to lead an orchestra with talented, friendly and enthusiastic musicians, and a music director who is himself a distinguished violinist, leader, and teacher.

In addition to the musical duties listed below, the Leader is entitled (and encouraged) to contribute to all aspects of the running of the orchestra and receives an honorarium, agreed by the membership.

If you are interested in the position, please contact the Secretary, Bethan Barlow at

Closing date for applications - 20th September 2017

The orchestra also has other vacancies especially for string players. We would, therefore, also welcome expressions of interest from any musicians who would like to join the orchestra.

Leader's duties

  1. Attend at least 75% of rehearsals through the year.
  2. Ensure a bowed part is available for copying by the section at the start of the rehearsal period and liaise with other section leaders on bowing.
  3. Give advice on technique, fingering etc.
  4. Take string sectionals if required.
  5. Assist the Music Director in devising programmes for agreement by the committee.

Note: The duties above are those which have been fulfilled by recent leaders of the orchestra. The orchestra may also consider the possibility of some form of co-leadership, involving sharing some of these duties, and interested applicants are welcome to contact us and discuss this further, if relevant to their application.
